Community Involvement

Our surgeons are not only expert clinicians, but also talented teachers, investigators, and humanitarians.

Faith in Practice

Since 2007, Dr. Wilson H Hartz III has led a group of physicians and nurses from Northwestern Memorial Hospital on a medical mission in Retalhuleu, Guatemala. The sponsoring organization, Faith in Practice, serves more than 20,000 patients annually in Guatemala.

Other members of NSA and residents in the General Surgery Residency Program volunteer a week of their time to join Dr. Hartz twice each year. For his longstanding commitment to treating this underserved population, Dr. Hartz was honored with the 2014 Humanitarian Award by Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Please visit www.faithinpractice.org to find out how to contribute to this worthy organization.

General Surgery Residency

We are committed to teaching the next generation of surgeons through our role in the General Surgery Residency Training Program at Northwestern University. Our surgeons consistently receive teaching awards and continuously have medical students and residents on service. Over the course of years, NSA has funded one resident to conduct basic science or clinical research in the field of surgery. NSA also funds the annual Gerald T Ujiki Lectureship on Surgical Education, named in honor of one of our founding members and emeritus partner. This lectureship allows experts in the field of surgical education to come to Northwestern Memorial Hospital to share their insights with our Department of Surgery.

The Steven J Stryker M.D. Gastrointestinal Surgery, Education and Research Endowment was funded in 2018 to provide annual support for resident and fellow research into gastrointestinal diseases.*

In 2019, NSA began funding a Resident Wellness Fund to support healthy lifestyles for the General Surgery Residents at Northwestern University's McGaw Medical Center

"I first met with Dr. Fronza to discuss bariatric surgery in August 2015. He expertly guided me through the process and ultimately I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in February 2016. My whole experience has been wonderful and would recommend Dr. Fronza to anyone considering a bariatric procedure. He is always kind and courteous and responded to my emails within a few hours."

"I was suffering from a failed Nissen Fundoplication for 6 months under a different doctor's care. I had taken matters in my own hands and found Dr. Fronza!!!! One week from consult to surgery is all he had taken. I even switched my general physician to Northwestern Hospital group. Thank you Dr. Fronza!!!!!!” (Mar 11, 2016) | Read More on Healthgrades »

"After two years of seeing pulmonary and gastroenterology specialists at two facilities, he was able to perform the LINX surgery necessary to fix my severe GERD that exacerbated my asthma. Getting an appointment was extremely easy. Dr. Fronza is friendly and professional; has an excellent bedside manner. He was very thorough in reviewing my atypical presentation and medical history and scheduled further studies to confirm the LINX surgery was needed. Surgery was scheduled within 6 weeks of my first appointment. The actual surgery was very successful - all GERD and respiratory symptoms gone!! Follow-up appointments have been easy and Dr. Fronza is readily available via email to answer any questions or concerns I have. I highly recommend Dr. Fronza and his team!” (March 9, 2017) | Read More on Facebook »
